I like to add embroidery to clothing I make and mostly it's quite unobstrusive but that depends on the garment and it's intended use. I don't bother digitising my own designs, although have done a few times, but I would prefer to spend my time sewing and/or embroidering designs I've downloaded from the internet. I love the larger hoops and this was the main reason for upgrading. Since 2001 I've owned five different embroidery machines (all Janome, naturally) with the 500E being the current machine and it is 'the' best so far. In short, this is a fantastic machine and I would buy it again in a heart beat. The 500e does it all and does it beautifully. I've embroidered everything from lace to quilt blocks to towels to heavy vinyl and light leather with no issues what so ever. I've never had an issue with any type of thread, I think Janome machines are the least thread picky of any machines I own, though I usually use a separate thread stand instead of the built in one. I've done some gorgeous projects from the built in designs. The number of built in designs(and all the different types of designs) is great too.

The 500e can do so much that I keep the manual handy when I'm using it. I downloaded the manual before I even bought the machine so I had a head start. The first thing I do with any new machine is read the manual from cover to cover then go back and read it again. Grab a cuppa something and sit down with it. The manual is better written than many I've seen, and explains things so that anyone who embroiders can understand it. It's so easy to do, really anyone can do it. It was one of the big selling points for me. I also REALLY LOVE that I can service this machine myself. I just can't say enough great things about the built in editing. I love playing around with letters and border shapes, arcing them and just playing around. OMG, the things this machine can do! Who else has 7 standard hoop sizes? I love, love, love the on board editing capabilities, I can do anything right in the machine that the expensive softwares can do. When I saw the sneak peeks of the 500e I knew I had to have it! I actually bought two of them so my BFF could have fun embroidering without the frustration her little Brother machine gave her. I was hooked! A few months later I bought the MC350e.
In late 2013 I started with the MC200e to see if I would enjoy machine embroidery. I was up and sewing within 2 hours of brining it home, and that's because I read the book first. Buy it, I don't think you will be sorry you did. You can just go back to where the thread broke, and go from there.
It truly does beautiful work, and so very little is ruined because of a thread break, or bobbin issue, of which there are not many. Not cheap, and I don't have a lot of money to spend, but I have never been sorry I bought this machine. I go thru the different sections, and always find new things I didn't know I had.

The best thing you can do for yourself in regard to the software, is download and print out the pdf manuel. It has so much, I still don't know what all I can do.
But, it really helps to just watch the video, it only lasts a couple of minutes, and sit and read the book. This is truly a wonderful and friendly machine. I sew a lot, but not with an embroidery machine.
